About Sending Files Via The Internet

Files can be easily transmitted via the Internet. Most email programs allow you to attach a file to a message, or you can use FTP software such as Fetch on a Mac or WS_FTP on a PC. It is critical however, that the file be properly encoded so that it can be used by the person receiving it.

About Encoding

Most files are binary, but the Internet can only transfer text-based files. Encoding converts your binary file into text so it can be transferred via the Internet. The two most common encoding methods are MIME (also called "Base 64") and BinHex (also called "8-bit" or HQX). We recommend using MIME for PC files and BinHex for Mac files.

About Compression

All files being sent via the Internet should be compressed first. This can be done on a Mac using CompactPro, Stuffit or DiskDoubler. On a PC, PKZip or WinZip are the best choices. Compressing your files will make the files smaller to speed transfers, and it will group multiple files into one file. We have all the latest decompression programs, so it is not necessary or recommended to save the files as a "self-extracting archive".

Some Tips To Ensure Successful File Transfers

  • Don't try to send a Mac file from a PC, or a PC file from a Mac.
  • Don't compress files as "self- extracting archives".
  • Call or email your QGC Sales Representative to let them know the file has
    been sent, and what you need done with it.
  • Include the following information about the file, and any special instructions
    in the message section of the email:

  1. Name of person sending file

  2. Company

  3. Phone number in case of a problem with the file

  4. Compression program used

  5. Encoding method used
